In a world where deceit is endorsed and truth irrelevant, the power brokers walking the halls of the European Commission engage in a game of subterfuge that they think is diabolically clever; except that unbeknownst to them, they have just driven another nail into the side of a comatose patient already in the throes of economic demise… “The EU”!
Carefully planning, funding and stage managing global anti-palm oil campaigns carried out by proxy by cash-hungry green groups, these Mandarins ensconced in the offices of the Environmental Directorate of the EC surreptitiously orders that the global campaigns should be conducted in such a fashion and spread geographically and amongst green groups, zoos and other agencies so as to give the appearance of spontaneity and randomness.
The latest manifestation of this evil scheme is a paper presented by Simona D’Antone, Robert Spencer and Danielle Castagnoni of Euromed Management of the Luminy Campus in Marseille, FRANCE at the 2nd Interdisciplinary Market Studies workshop in Dublin, Ireland on June 7-8 2012 entitled “About Labels, shapes and shades of markets: The Green Palm Label and Palm Oil Scorecard as instances of Market Making and Shaping.”
The paper purportedly provides insight into the roles labels play in changing market practices, but also into the agents at work, and the processes and practices at play leading to the very emergence and development of these labels, and consequences for the forms markets take.
What is interesting about the paper is that only palm oil is considered for labeling but not its competitors. If sustainability is the goal, then palm oil’s competitors should be the prime targets for green labeling as on a sustainability basis, none of them even comes close to palm oil in terms of sustainability primarily on account of palm oil’s inherent hyper yield nature which requires up to 10 times less land then competitors such as rapeseed and sunflower.
The current “Palm Oil Free” campaign being carried out in France in the baked goods category which accounts for 80% of all “Palm Oil Free” bakery products in the EU is just one example.
What the officials in the EC did not consider is the irreparable harm that they have wrought on the livelihood of tens of thousands of South East Asian small farmers who eke out a living cultivating what is ultimately the most sustainable of all oilseeds known on this planet and millions more who depend on the upstream and downstream production activities associated with it. Perhaps these officials in their over-exuberance to erect artificial trade barriers against palm oil were determined to protect the EU’s own edible oilseed industries such as rapeseed and sunflower oil, which can’t compete in a level playing field against the hyper yielding palm oil. Perhaps they could not care less that, unlike other edible oilseeds, 40% of global palm oil production is produced by small farmers!
What these crooks wearing the cloak of officialdom in the EC obviously did not consider is the economic calamity that would eventually befall on the EU such as the grouping is experiencing now. Perhaps it is karma that the EU would get their just deserts by taking their eye off the ball!
Instead of focusing on enacting legitimate economic policies encouraging growth, productivity and exports as Asia has done, the EU focuses on encouraging consumption, excesses and leverage that ushered in the banking crisis sweeping the EU today. What is even sadder is the focus and wasteful commitment of resources on subterfuge and other covert activities designed to keep non-competitive industries in business!
In the circumstances, one should be wary of the French campaign to promote green palm labeling. In any event, any prediction of anything that smacks of an end game of a carefully orchestrated campaign against palm oil is by and of itself reprehensible if palm oil’s competitors are exempted from the exercise! THE END.
